Mental health nursing also known as psychiatric nursing, is a branch of nursing that relates to the care of patients that are suffering from a mental condition. Nurses who embark on a career in the mental health nursing field are expected to undergo an added training course to study the different aspects of psychiatric care. They have to undergo studies that are related to psychotic behavior, psychiatric medicines, psychological therapies and other elements of mental health nursing.

In the US, mental health nursing is actually split into three sub-branches. There are designations assigned to these mental health nursing practitioners, such as the licensed vocational nurse, also called the licensed practical nurse, the registered psychiatric nurse and the licensed psychiatric technician. Just like in your average nursing grades, mental health nursing also has certain rules pertaining to the restrictions that these nurses have in terms of their duties.

The licensed practical nurses working in the mental health nursing field, actually have the same type of responsibilities as their regular nursing colleagues, and are limited to the dispensing of medications, assisting the registered psychiatric nurses and the physicians who are attending these patients. The same applies to the licensed psychiatric technician, who helps to collect data on the psychiatric patients that the doctors manage. A registered psychiatric nurse is often assigned more responsibilities than the practical nurse due to the more extensive study they had to undergo to pass their studies and become a registered nurse.

When a person wants to enter the field of mental health nursing, they can do so by studying to become a licensed practical nurse. They can achieve this by training for one or two years about certain aspects of nursing, like anatomy, treatment of patients, pharmacology and physiology. Before they do undergo practical nursing training, they should be at least a high school graduate to qualify. After their training students must then pass the national board exams, before they can obtain a license to practice.

Mental health nursing is a branch of nursing that requires utmost patience and understanding. The individuals who practice it, or want to practice it must also possess superior interpersonal skills as well as the ability to establish a good rapport with their patients, to further help them with their mental health issues. If an individual does not possess any of these special personality traits that should be part of a psychiatric nurse's character, it would be pretty hard for them to handle the challenges that mental health nursing will make on them.
