Active infra red equipment works in the same way as a normal active device except that they make use of light that the human eye is not able to deal with and create a visible image from it. This type of light is emitted by almost all living things and these devices give you the ability to see them when there is no normal light at all.

Image Intensifiers are at the high-end and use all available light sources, from the visible spectrum and the infra red, to create a good quality image. This type of technology is normally only used by the military.

Your selection of a night binocular comes down to what type of ambient light you will be functioning in and how much you are willing to spend.
